Cape San Blas Breakwater Project to Begin in December

After more than six years of planning, construction is expected to start in December 2025 on a major coastal protection effort along Cape San Blas.

The project is being carried out by Weeks Marine, Inc., which was awarded a $40+ million contract.

The plan involves placing 830,000 cubic yards of sand along 1.1 miles of shoreline, plus installing submerged breakwaters (underwater barriers) to help retain that sand over time.

These breakwaters are forecasted to improve sand retention by up to 50% (compared to just beach nourishment) after six years, helping fight erosion.

The funding for the project comes from multiple sources:

$10 million from the Florida Department of Environmental Protection (DEP)

RESTORE Act funds (from the Deepwater Horizon oil spill)

National Fish & Wildlife Foundation grants

$3 million committed by the Gulf County Tourist Development Council

Permitting is mostly in place: approvals from FDEP and the Army Corps of Engineers have been secured, with final reviews underway from the National Marine Fisheries Service.

Weeks Marine plans to finish the bulk of the work in about four months, with a target completion as soon as possible.
