Proceeds from the annual South Gulf Butt Roast, running from May 23 to 25, will go to help support equipment and training for the department.

The South Gulf County Volunteer Fire Department ‘s non-profit “provides funding for essential needs not covered in the fire department budget, yet our local Cape San Blas, Indian Pass, 30-A community requests life saving services, such as water rescue and beach safety, first emergency responders and the 20 beach flag warning system in our immediate beach area,” said Patrick Foy, a member of the board of the department.

Foy said the department plans to grill and sell about 40 Boston butts this week, beginning at 8 a.m. Thursday, May 23 at Scallop RePUBlic.

“The secret to our success is a terrific 8 to 10-pound pork shoulder ordered-in from Piggly Wiggly in Port St. Joe, Bad Byron’s Butt Rub HQ in Freeport, just the right amount of smoke from pecan wood and nine-plus hours of low-slow grilling courtesy of the new rotisserie grill owned by Boy Scout Troop 47 here in Port St. Joe,” said Foy. “This year we are also partnering with Two Fish Market here in Port St. Joe, encouraging folks that when they buy a butt, to buy a second butt, which will in turn be donated to Two Fish Market recipients.”
