St. Joseph Peninsula beach nourishment project set for 2025

The St. Joseph Peninsula Coastal Structures Project in Gulf County, Florida, has been temporarily postponed and is now anticipated to commence in 2025. The project aims to place between 600,000 and 800,000 cubic yards of sand from a previously utilized offshore borrow area, enhancing the shoreline last nourished in 2019. Additionally, eight submerged breakwaters are planned to help retain the sand on the beach for a longer duration. The delay follows two rounds of bidding in August and October 2024, each yielding a single bid significantly exceeding the available construction budget. In response, the county and its coastal engineering consultant are exploring alternative strategies to reduce overall costs and expedite the project’s initiation.
